Asianne Troupe

Airdrie’s own Middle Eastern Dance instructor, Suzy, formed the Asianne Dance Troupe in the spring of 1999. This troupe of 20 dancers is composed mainly of women from Airdrie and the surrounding areas. As the artistic director, Suzy composes and instructs the majority of the intricate choreographies the troupe performs.

The Asianne Dance Troupe has been actively involved in Airdrie and Calgary’s performing arts scene for the past several years. They perform in various Student Shows throughout the year as well as community events such as the Chinese New Year Banquet, Canada Day Parade, and Chautauqua to name a few. They have also danced for corporate functions, private functions and fundraisers.

The Arabian Market is a theatrical show that showcases the Asianne Dance Troupe.  It allows the troupe to perform several styles of dance from the different regions of Egypt.

The troupe is continuously working on new choreographies that generally encompass various Raks Sharki techniques. Their repertoire includes such dances as Raks Assaya (cane dance), Raks Beladi (the people’s dance), Raks Shammadan (candleabra), Saidi, Fellaheen, Drum Solos, Nubian, Ghawazee, Veil dance interpretations, Sword dance and the improvisational American Tribal Style dances.  The latest one is a character dance.  The dancers have to look and act like there character, Betty Boop, Grease, & Spice Girls.  You got to have fun! :)
